Despite the central concept's lack of humor or levity, however, there were still plenty of opportunities for DeMatties to inject some wackiness into this tale, most of which he chose to ignore.Īs a result, ' Hail the Tornado Tyrant' progresses like a lifeless story thrown together in an unconvincing paint-by-numbers manner. Part of that is due to the story itself – the idea of Red Tornado creating a pint-sized android that turns evil after failing to understand human emotions hardly oozes with comedic potential. The episode's opening – a chase scene involving Batman, Joker and Green Arrow – is infinitely more energetic and spirited than its main story, which includes a fraction of the fun despite being about four times as long. The fact that the episode lacks the same depth of emotion as its android star is probably the only thing clever about it. Instead, writer J.M DeMatties delivers an utterly humorless and morose story about the Red Tornado's attempt to create a robot 'son' capable of feeling genuine human emotion. Following last week's ridiculously enjoyable ' Legends of the Dark Mite' – the series' best episode by far – this week's includes none of the goofy laughs, irreverent tone or inspired high concepts I've come to expect from this series.
